I know it’s a little late to be celebrating but I thought I couldn’t let the month end without at least mentioning it.

As a romance writer, I’ve spent my fair share of hours reading the genre. There are so many books out there that are more than just a romance. The one’s that grab me are filled with complex characters, an enticing storyline and heart-filled sentiment.

The first one I can remember savoring was Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss. Ruark might have been a bit obsessive and Shanna might have been a little bit spoiled but for some reason it stayed with me. That was back in the 70’s when I wanted to be swept away by dangerous men and strong-willed women.

A lot has changed since then. Not only my taste in reading material but in how romances are written. Men don’t have to take charge anymore and there’s fewer bodice-ripping scenes. Today I’m more into contemporary stories with strong women, light-hearted romance, and some I read for the pure enjoyment of “take-me-away” moments.

Some of my favorite authors over the years have been Elizabeth Lowell and Linda Howard. Susan Elizabeth Phillips is high on my list, with quirky characters that light up the pages. Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb is a master at the genre. Susan Mallery and Jill Shalvis are easy reads. Newer authors I’ve binged on are Elle Kennedy and Sabrina Bowen. They might be a bit more earthy and sexually explicit but the characters are likeable. My editor Amy Knupp has some great work out there and I always get my kindle ready when she’s about to publish.

Is there a book or author out there that you like? A kind of romance you’re drawn to?
